Neuro Pilates

Pilates-based movement for children and teens.

Neuro Pilates combines principles of Pilates with a pediatric physical therapy lens to build strength, postural control, balance, coordination, endurance, and more efficient movement patterns. Sessions are individualized to each child and can be used as a standalone service or as a complement to traditional physical therapy and intensive therapy.

Who is it for?

Neuro Pilates may be a good fit for children and teens who benefit from additional work on:

• Core and trunk strength
• Postural control
• Balance and coordination
• Hip and shoulder stability
• Strength and endurance
• Body awareness
• Motor control
• Gait-related strength
• Functional movement
• Movement efficiency and alignment

What Sessions May Include.

Depending on the child’s goals, sessions may incorporate mat Pilates, reformer-based exercises, stability chair, resistance work, supported standing, functional strengthening, balance activities, transitional movements, and exercises designed to carry over into everyday mobility.

How It’s Different.

Sessions are one-on-one and guided by a pediatric physical therapist with experience working with complex neurological and developmental diagnoses. Exercises are adapted to the child’s abilities, equipment needs, precautions, and functional goals.

Who I Work With.

Sessions may be appropriate for children and teens with diagnoses such as cerebral palsy, genetic and neurological conditions, Down syndrome, neuromuscular disorders, scoliosis, developmental delays, and other movement-related diagnoses

Ways to Use Neuro Pilates

Neuro Pilates can be used:

• As a standalone strengthening session
• Between intensive therapy blocks
• As part of a weekly or drop-in therapy schedule
• To complement traditional PT
• As an additional hour during a longer intensive day
• For older children and teens who may benefit from a more age-appropriate strengthening format

What to Expect

Every session begins with the child’s current goals and abilities. Exercises are selected and progressed based on what will best support functional movement outside of Pilates. Sessions are individualized rather than following a preset class format.
